Trees are some of the most majestic features nature has to offer, but there are many things that are still unknown about them. As much as we might not understand, there is a lot of information that the arborists here at Five Star Tree Services know very well. One thing we know is that in order to have healthy trees, it is critical to provide them with routine care and maintenance. If you live in an urban environment, it is even more important your trees are properly cared for to ensure their longevity.
How Often Should an Arborist Check My Trees?
There is no right or wrong answer. There are so many different tree species growing in a diverse range of locations. In order to properly set a care schedule, the tree would need an initial evaluation. There are some trees that only need to be cared for as the season changes while others may need maintenance more often. The main goal is that your tree is properly cared for on a regular basis to ensure it remains free of sickness and vermin all year long. Our care falls into two groups, reactive and preventive.
Preventive Care
Preventative tree care is the best form, and it occurs before a problem develops. Maintaining your tree on a regular schedule ensures there will be fewer cuts and those cuts will be less invasive. It also will help promote healing and growth in your tree. Sturdy happy trees live much longer than those that are sick or neglected. In the early stages of your tree’s life, it is important you introduce regular trimming care. If there is a problem, growth, break, or infestation, one of our skilled arborists can correct it quickly. They will help ensure your tree develops a healthy and thick canopy as the tree matures. Preventative maintenance is also much more cost-effective over time than reactive care.
Reactive Care
Reactive tree care is important but is not the best way to take care of your trees. Storms and accidents happen, and if they damage your tree then reactive care is the only course of action. However, if you have trees that simply have not been maintained but have already reached the age of maturity, their care becomes more complex. Reactive care is the more invasive form of care given to the tree. Just like humans, as trees age, they become more set in their habits. Problems such as weak unions, cracked branches, overgrown limbs, heavy girdling roots, and damaged bark are harder to correct. In many cases, reactive care on mature trees results in limb loss or even full tree removal. Preventative care can also help save your tree if it gets sick or infested, while reactive care often occurs past the point of being able to save the tree.
