Winter has finally ended and spring is finally here. Now that the warmer weather is upon us, this means our trees need a bit of TLC. If you are a new homeowner, have owned your home for a while, or just looking for some new tips, our team here at Five Star Tree Services would like to provide you with our tips and tricks for spring yard preparation!
Time for A Trim
The first thing you need to do is locate and remove all dead or diseased branches from your trees. Next, you should remove any extra stubs from older limbs, as well as cut back any branches you see rubbing together. If you have large, older trees, you should consult professionals to help with any pruning. They will be able to utilize the proper equipment in order to safely remove any large branches.
Spring Cleaning
It’s time to tidy up. This means taking down any lingering holiday decorations around your yard. If you leave lights wrapped around your trees, this can restrict their growth and warp them over time. If you prefer to leave your lights up all year long, you can utilize other, safer ways to hang your lights that won’t hurt the tree. The next step is to thoroughly weed around every tree. You will find that during your spring preparation is the easiest time to weed.
Energy Boost
If you have large trees, for every inch of diameter, put roughly a quarter – half a pound of nitrogen. If you have smaller trees, put about a quarter of a pound. Over time, you will be able to easily tell if you need to add more fertilizer to your trees. You can put this fertilizer on the drip lines of your trees. For faster absorption, make holes surrounding your tree and apply your fertilizer.
Drink Up!
The amount of water you provide your trees is going to vary depending on how old they are. If you have well established trees, which are more than a few years old, do not pour water directly next to or on their trunk. The older the tree, the farther their roots stretch under the ground. You want to make sure you are watering their roots, since this is how the tree absorbs the water, not from the trunk. Broad, circular watering is recommended in a circumference around the tree. This will make sure to properly water them and, in turn, keep them healthier and more protected against diseases. For younger trees, whose roots are not as established and far stretching, you will need to water it closer to the trunk. You can count on this for trees that are less than 3 years old.
Let’s Mulch
When all is said and done, the last thing you will want to do is put a layer of mulch around the base of your trees which is about 3-4 inches thick. Even though this might seem like a lot, it is protecting your tree’s roots. This is a very important step that should not be missed, as it will help them retain moisture. Not to mention that it helps to keep weeds away and protect your tree from your lawnmower.
