Trees are an important part of any landscape. They offer shade, beauty, cleaner air, and increased property value. However, not all trees can or should remain standing forever. In some cases, tree removal becomes necessary for safety, health, or property concerns. But how do you know when it’s time to take that step?
At Five Star Tree Services, we believe in preserving healthy trees whenever possible. Still, certain signs indicate that removing a tree may be the best—or only—option. If you notice any of the following signs, it’s time to consider professional tree removal services before the problem worsens.
1. The Tree Is Dead or Dying
A dead tree may still be standing, but it poses a significant risk to nearby people, property, and other plants. Dead branches become brittle and can fall at any time, especially during windstorms or heavy snow. Even worse, a fully dead tree may eventually collapse without warning.
Some signs that a tree is dead or dying include:
- No leaves during the growing season
- Peeling or cracked bark
- Large dead branches in the canopy
- Fungal growth or mushrooms at the base
- Soft, crumbling wood
If more than 50% of the tree is dead or diseased, it is often safer and more cost-effective to remove it. Don’t wait for it to become a liability—our certified arborists can assess the tree’s condition and recommend the best course of action.
2. Structural Instability or Severe Leaning
While some trees naturally grow at an angle, a sudden or increasing lean could indicate serious structural issues. A tree that is leaning more than 15 degrees from vertical is often considered hazardous, especially if it’s close to your home, driveway, sidewalk, or neighbouring property.
Leaning can result from:
- Root damage or failure
- Soil erosion
- Heavy storms or wind damage
- Improper pruning
If the tree has developed a lean due to shifting roots or trunk cracks, it may be beyond saving. An unstable tree is unpredictable and can fall with little to no warning, making removal the safest option.
3. Pest Infestation or Fungal Decay
Insects and fungi play essential roles in forest ecosystems, but when they infest or attack a tree in your yard, they can compromise its health and structure. Some signs of pest infestation include:
- Sawdust-like material near the trunk (from boring insects)
- Visible insects such as carpenter ants or beetles
- Holes or tunnels in the bark
- Excessive leaf loss or discolouration
Fungal infections, particularly root rot or decay at the base of the trunk, are even more concerning. Once decay sets in, the structural integrity of the tree weakens. You may notice mushrooms, soft or hollow areas, and a sour or musty odour. At this stage, tree removal is often the only option to protect the surrounding area from falling limbs or collapse.
4. Damage to Property or Interference with Infrastructure
Even healthy trees can cause problems if they grow too close to structures or utilities. Roots can lift pavement, damage foundations, or interfere with underground plumbing and sewer systems. Overhead branches may grow into power lines or rest dangerously close to your roof.
In these cases, regular trimming might not be enough to mitigate the risk. If a tree is compromising your property’s safety or posing an insurance liability, removing it may be the most practical solution.
Additionally, if you’re planning to build an addition, install a pool, or landscape your yard, removing certain trees might be necessary to make room for the project or protect nearby structures.
