Summer is full of long hot days full of sunshine. Although people love this kind of weather, your plants are going to need a lot of water in order to be healthy and not stressed. This makes it important for you to know how to properly water them consistently. There is a happy medium between watering them too much and not enough. Our team here at Five Star Tree Services is going to go over proper summer watering habits so you can find the goldilocks amount to keep your trees and plants as healthy as can be.
The Golden Rules of Summer Watering
Evenly Moist Plants
It’s important to have an even distribution of moisture/water in order to allow even dispersed nourishment and to keep them cool. You should be thinking of targeting all the roots by watering around each plant to allow moisture to get to the whole irrigation area. If you only water on one side, this promotes an unhealthy one-sided root growth, which leads to lopsided nutrient absorption. It’s best to use an irrigation system that has a moisture sensor, this will help to save water.
Let The Roots Get Water
Each plant is going to have different requirements for how much water they need. This is mainly because of how deep the root system goes. As the plant grows, so do its roots, which is going to require you to guess approximately how much water you need in order to reach the bottom of the roots without over or under watering. If you don’t give them enough water to reach the roots, they won’t be able to get it and they will die. If you give them too much water the results are equally as detrimental.
Thoroughly Water
You do not need to always water your plants, but when you do, you need to make sure it’s thorough. One or two times a week should be adequate. Let the water soak deep into the soil and get to all the root systems. When watering, give it a moment to leech down into the ground instead of pooling on the surface. Frequent watering in small amounts will not allow your plants to grow. Depending on the frequency, this could add up to overwatering. If your plants are constantly exposed to water, this will inevitably lead to root rot.
Don’t Let the Leaves Get Wet
When the leaves get wet, this allows diseases the chance to infiltrate the plant. If a plant has wet leaves overnight, it’s possible for mold to grow. In order to keep your plants from getting diseases, try your best to keep the leaves dry as much as possible.
Don’t Let the Ground Get Waterlogged
Having your plants in a pool of water is not good. This is referred to as waterlogging and this will deprive the roots of necessary oxygen, which they need.
