Even though your beloved trees are hibernating for the winter, there are certain things you can do to help them along once spring arrives. We here at Five Star Tree Services have made a checklist of important treatments for you to follow in order to give your trees a healthy start this spring.
Winter Checklist
Salt Removal
Depending on where your trees are located on your property in proximity to things like roads, walkways, and sidewalks, they are bound to be exposed to a plethora of things like de-icing salts. Although these salts are safe for people, they are deadly to trees and when the salt seeps into the soil when spring arrives, your shrubs and trees will suffer. One thing you can do to help prevent this from happening is before winter arrives, apply a Salt Buffer. This is a granulated gypsum application that you put around the root zone of your shrubs and trees to draw the salt molecules out of the soil and wash it away. Doing this is a great way to ensure the health and survival of your foliage.
Preventative Pest Control
In recent years, there have been a lot of pest infestations happening. Particularly for scale. If your trees have been experiencing this problem, buy a dormant oil spray treatment and apply it before the full force of spring is upon us. Doing this is going to help control those pests for the remainder of the spring and summer months.
Pruning/Trimming
This is especially important if you have fruit trees, the best time to prune them is during the winter months when they are sound asleep. Trimming them before they wake up in the spring will help to promote new and healthy growth. You will also notice that they will be full of beautiful leaves and more fruit! If you have either an Elm, Oak or both in your yard, winter is the only time you can safely prune them to protect them against nasty diseases like Oak Wilt and Dutch Elm Disease.
