Winter is just around the corner but luckily, hasn’t arrived just yet. This is the perfect time to help your trees get through whatever mother nature has to throw at us this coming winter season. This means giving them a little extra helping hand to prepare them for the next season- we’re talking about winterizing your trees. If you are not sure how to go about winterizing your beloved trees, we here at Five Star Tree Services have come up with a few helpful tips for you to use!
Tidy The Yard
This is not only good for your trees but your entire property as well. When leaves fall, they have the potential to harbor dangerous spores that can infect and infest your trees when springtime rolls around. These can come from pests and other diseases. In order to help prevent this, raking up all the leaves (especially the rotten ones) from around the trees and surrounding area, is how you can prevent issues later on.
One Last Water Before Winter
For every inch your tree’s trunk has, it requires about 10 gallons of water. As trees are naturally getting themselves ready for the winter, they will start to pull water and nutrients through their roots and bring it into the rest of the tree in preparation to go dormant for the winter months. When you water your trees right before they go to sleep for the winter, this gives them a helping hand for their hibernation. You should do this at the end of fall but before the ground freezes.
Professional Pruning
As soon as all the leaves have fallen off your trees, it is safe to have them professionally pruned. This also helps any problem areas become easily visible. All dead or diseased branches should be removed in order to help prevent bigger future problems in the spring.
Protect Trees from Sunscalding
This particular problem happens during the winter when the sun gets hot enough to melt moisture that’s on a tree’s bark but when the temperature drops at night, the melted moisture freezes again and actually ruptures the cells on the tree bark. You can see when this happens because there will be a dead spot on the trunk where the cells were destroyed. To prevent this from happening, you can use a thin canvas to wrap around your tree. You can also use plastic to cover the exposed bark from the ruthless winter elements.
