During the spring is when you can help kickstart your trees’ health and success that will carry them throughout the summer and fall. Our team at Five Star Tree Services wants to go over 6 tree care tips!
Pest & Damage Inspection
Canadian winters are harsh and can be hard on your trees. With this, you might see some signs of damage or disease that occurred over the winter months. In addition to this, some animals and insects take refuge in your trees over the wither and throughout the remaining 3 seasons. Some diseases can be hard to spot and identify. If this is the case you find yourself in, you should consult a professional arborist to come and assess the health of your tree. They can identify if anything is wrong, make a plan, and execute it.
Replenish the Mulch
The colder the winter, the dryer the soil will be around your trees and their roots. To make sure they get moisture back, you should add mulch or replenish your mulch from last spring. This is going to help protect your trees from dry soil and weeds. As always, make sure to keep the mulch away from the trunk of our trees. A healthy layer of 2-4 inches should do the trick but be careful not to put too much or you can unintentionally create a “mulch volcano”, which can kill your tree.
Tree Pruning
Think of pruning like getting a yearly haircut. It is a great way to help the aesthetic of your tree, while also allowing you to get rid of any dead, dying, or diseased branches. Which will help your trees throughout the spring. You should aim to prune your trees before the buds come out.
Fertilize Your Trees
Just like coffee gives you a little extra boost of energy in the morning, fertilizing your trees is a great way to help them kickstart their growing and give them much needed nutrients to grow.
Water Your Trees
Waking up after a long winter is thirsty work, help your trees by providing a good amount of water. Remember to take into account the species, size, and age of your tree to help determine how much water to provide them. Always water deeply to get down to the root system. The roots are roughly 18-24 inches below the surface, and you want to be watering those, not just the soil above them. The longer you water for, the better the chance you are going to be properly saturating the roots with it and they will be able to retain the water better.
Dead Tree Removal & New Planting
To help get your yard ready for spring and improve the overall aesthetic, you should remove all dead trees. Not only is it not aesthetically pleasing to look at dead trees, but they can harbour diseases that can spread to your other trees. You should always have professional tree removal when dealing with this kind of thing. Even though removing a tree can be sad, you can always plant a new one!
