Sometimes, even though people have good intentions when planting and taking care of trees, they simply are uneducated and end up running into problems. We here at Five Star Tree Services are going to go over some common issues people run into with their tree planting and care and how you can avoid these issues.
Overpopulating The Same tree
A common mistake people tend to make is planting too many of the same species of tree in a row. For instance, one of the major reasons there has been an increase in emerald ash borer infestation is due to densely populated ash trees, which allow these pests to run rampant and decimate this particular tree population. This then requires the planting of new species of trees to replenish the ones that have been killed.
This makes the need to alternate your tree species vitally important due to the fact that if there were a larger diversity in trees, the sheer volume of decimated ash trees would have been reduced. If you want to plant a line of trees in a row or group trees together, think carefully about planting a variety of different tree species in order to help stop infestation problems down the road.
Too Close for Comfort
Another common problem is that people try to plant trees way too close together in a confined space. This leads to multiple trees not having adequate space between them. When this happens, it usually leads to canopies colliding into each other, which then results in leaf loss and dead branches. This is due to inadequate amounts of sun reaching these leaves and branches. Not only do these close proximity trees compete for sunlight for their leaves, but they also are competing for water resources and proper nutrients. When this happens, the trees become visibly stressed. This further compromises the tree, especially if severe weather conditions emerge. This can take the form of long periods of drought. If a tree is under continuous stress, it becomes vulnerable to infestations and other pathogens that will eventually kill it.
Property Line Encroaching
In many cases, homeowners seem to like to plant their shrubs and trees extremely close to their property line. This, in turn, results in the shrubs and trees needing to be cut or removed from things like wooden or metal fencing. This also elicits opportunities for trees to grow onto or in neighbors’ properties and potentially becoming a hindrance or danger. Therefore, branches might need to be removed if they bother the neighbor. Some instances, branches have needed to be cut because they were growing into the house o, pool, shed, or other structures on a neighboring property. When a tree or shrub encroaches on their property, they are within their full right to trim back anything hanging over the property line. But this leads to inexperienced and untrained people making inappropriate cuts to the branches that can potentially harm the tree. Not to mention that these issues can cause unnecessary stress between neighbors and end up damaging the trees.
Building Proximity
It seems like a lot of the time, when people plant trees, they do not take into account how big it will eventually grow. This leads people to plant trees way too close to buildings, which leads to many different problems later on. Trees with a proximity that is too close to a building might need to have their branches trimmed back that are reaching over rooftops or smashing into windows. Or the roots might start infiltrating important pipelines under the lawn or wreak havoc on the building structure. When thinking about planting a tree near a building, select one based on the size of the crown at full growth. For instance, in tight spaces, an English Oak is a better option than a maple.
Properly Plant A Tree
The first thing you need to do is pick a tree which is best for a particular location of your choice. This will require some research into what the maximum height and canopy size will be when it is fully grown. Doing this is going to save a lot of headaches and problems later on. Taking into account the natural surroundings is also very important.
