Winter is coming to an end and spring is just around the corner. This means it is a good time to start preparing your trees! A lot of people are under the misconception that they can just sit back and let mother nature run its course. However, we here at Five Star Tree Services are here to tell you that there are things you need to be doing to help prepare your trees for spring.
How to Prepare Your Trees for Spring
In order for your trees to be as healthy and aesthetically pleasing as possible, you are going to want to follow these tips.
Tree Inspection/Tidy
When the weather is nice enough to be outside, go around to all your trees and check for damages or diseases. Your tree is at its most visible because there are no leaves on it yet, allowing you to see everything clearly. While the weather is still cool and there are no buds on your trees, this is the perfect time to prune them. Get rid of any dead or damaged branches. You can also clear away any fall plants that were left overgrown.
Clean Property
It is time to go over your entire yard and get rid of any leaves remaining from the fall. Clear any branches that have fallen during the winter, along with any assorted winter buildup remaining. You are giving your yard a clean slate for spring and can start to grow!
Seasonal Preparations
While you were examining your trees, you should have taken note of which ones look like they need a little extra assistance. Now is the time to brace these trees and come up with a lightning diversion for old, tall trees, for protection.
Care & Planting
If you want to plant any new trees in your yard, now is the time. Add mulch around the base of all the new saplings. This is going to help with weed control and retaining moisture. Also make sure to add fertilizer to help kick start its growth.
Mulch
Go around to all your trees and make sure there is a 3-4 inch layer of mulch around the base.
Soil Tests
Different pH levels are required for different species of trees and plants. Periodically testing our soil for its pH levels can tell you how healthy your tree is and see if it will be able to properly grow. Make sure to get this soil tested professionally in order for accuracy.
Trimming & Pruning
In order to promote new growth and keep your tree healthy, you should have your tree professionally pruned. Arborists will take away all dead, damaged, and diseased branches.
Second Inspection
Once your trees have started to grow leaves, now is a good time for a second inspection. What you are checking for is if water is pooling around the base. This can cause damage over time. Look at the leaves for ant colour changes, for this can be a sign of stress or disease. Keep an eye out for insects, fungus, and diseases that may have come up. If you do find something wrong, make sure to contact a professional arborist for assistance.
